What we check before a used machine goes out

Whatever the brand, the checks run in the same order. First the meter, which tells us how much life remains in the drum, the fuser and the feed parts. Then the paper path and rollers, which wear first, and after that the fuser and drum for wear, marks and heat damage. The scanner glass and document feeder get examined for marks, streaks and misfeeds. Test pages in colour and mono show up banding, streaks and drift. Every tray, the finisher and any other option that comes with the machine is tested.

Last, the internal drive is securely erased, so nothing from a previous owner is left on it. A machine that fails one of those checks is repaired, or it is not sold.
