Redlands and the bay
Capalaba and Cleveland sit in the same council area and are quite different places to run a business. Capalaba is retail and bus interchange country. Cleveland is the bayside town with the council, the hospital and the ferry to Stradbroke Island. Printer service across the Redlands is carried out on site, with same day service on offer and the price settled by phone first.
Redland City covers a lot of ground. Capalaba, on Moreton Bay Road and Old Cleveland Road, has two big shopping centres, a bus station and a ring of offices, practices and trade premises. Cleveland, on Bloomfield Street, has the council chambers, the hospital on Weippin Street, the harbour and the ferry terminals. Between them run Birkdale, Wellington Point, Alexandra Hills and Ormiston, and further south Thornlands, Victoria Point and Redland Bay.
A business in Capalaba and a business in Cleveland may as well be in different suburbs. The traffic on Old Cleveland Road makes it real, so we ask where you are and plan accordingly.

The Capalaba commercial area is a mix of retail head offices, accountants, insurance and finance offices, physiotherapists and doctors, and a surprising number of trade businesses. The paper they print is quotes, invoices, patient forms and statements. Many run an A3 colour multifunction and a laser at the front counter.
The commonest calls are simple: feed trouble, a fuser that has aged out, a scan to email that stopped. A small business has no spare machine, so we try to finish in one visit.
The Redlands run in a curve around the bayside, and the work changes as you go.
| Area | What is there | What we meet |
|---|---|---|
| Capalaba and Alexandra Hills | Retail, health, trade premises, a hospital, schools | A3 colour copiers, workgroup lasers, shared machines |
| Cleveland and Ormiston | Council, the hospital, legal and finance offices, marine and ferry services | Mid range copiers, heavy use in public facing offices |
| Birkdale and Wellington Point | Shopfront suites, schools, small professional firms | Small colour multifunctions, a laser or two |
| Thornlands, Victoria Point, Redland Bay | Growing business centres, medical suites, marinas, boat services | Newer machines in newer buildings, a few marine businesses |
| Mount Cotton and the rural edge | Small firms, home based businesses, rural suppliers | Machines working on their own, with little IT support |
Redland City Council has its chambers in Cleveland, and the hospital draws specialist rooms and allied health practices around it. A council office prints a stream of forms and notices, often at the counter. A hospital precinct practice prints letters and referrals. The harbour and ferry services add marine and tourism offices, many of them small.
Public facing offices are easy to spot. When the copier stops a queue appears, so we try to bring the likely part with us and finish the same visit. Mention any gate or sign in procedure.
The bay is salty and humid, and a copier near the water takes it in. Rubber parts harden, connectors pick up corrosion, and paper stored in a back room curls. A machine that jams more in summer than winter is often telling you about the paper. If your machine lives in a shed or garage office at Redland Bay, it sees even more.
The usual list, with a bayside tilt.
Birkdale and Wellington Point have the quiet professional strip: accountants, insurance agents, small legal offices, physios, counsellors and bookkeepers. Their machines tend to be small A3 colour units or large A4 multifunctions, and they run for years without a service. The first sign of trouble is usually a small one: a stripe on the page, a corner that curls, a tray that sticks. Ring when you see it, before it grows.
The beachfront suburbs also have a lot of home based businesses that have moved into a shopfront or a unit. Their machines moved too, and a move can shift a copier off level. If a machine has started to skew its pages since the move, it is worth checking that it sits flat.
The southern end of the Redlands has grown quickly. Victoria Point has a busy shopping centre and a ring of medical and professional suites, and Redland Bay has marinas, boat services and small business parks. The offices are newer and the machines are too, which mostly means more network and sign in faults than mechanical ones.
Marine businesses print invoices, work orders and parts lists, and a lot of their paperwork gets greasy. We look at where the machine sits relative to the workshop door.
If a Redlands office has a damp problem, it shows up in the paper first. A ream stored in a cupboard against an outside wall absorbs moisture and curls. Printed, the sheet curls more. The copier jams at the registration roller and the exit path. Move the paper to an inner cupboard and rotate it so that the oldest is used first. We often fix a jam by changing the storage and nothing else.
The Redlands have a large commuting population, and many small businesses are run by people who head into the city from Monday to Friday and run a business in the evenings or on weekends. Those businesses ring us at odd hours, and a good short message with the details gets the day started. If the lines are busy the call is logged and returned, so leave the make, the model and the suburb.
What does a technician look at first on a Redlands job? The ream: is it dry, is it the right weight? Then the tray guides against the sheet size, and the maintenance counter, which shows whether a roller kit or a fuser is near its due date. Someone tidying a jam without care can leave a torn scrap behind a roller. Plenty of faults end at one of those four checks, and we show whoever is at the desk what to watch for.
The Redlands have a lot of schools, churches and community clubs. They print newsletters, forms, rosters and reports, and their machines are used by volunteers as well as staff. When someone who is not the regular user hits a jam, they tend to pull the paper out the wrong way. We often find a torn scrap behind a roller that has caused the next three jams.
A quick instruction card taped to the machine, showing which way the paper comes out, saves repairs.
Ferry and barge services from Cleveland and Toondah Harbour run to Stradbroke Island, and businesses on the mainland side handle bookings, freight paperwork and ticketing. Those offices run to a timetable. Tell us if yours does, and we say honestly what we can arrange.
Businesses shift between Capalaba, Cleveland and Victoria Point as they grow, and the copier goes with them. A move is a small project. The machine is cleaned and prepared, lifted with care, set up at the new address, connected to the network and tested for scanning and printing before we leave. Where the new space is a little narrow, we measure doors and corridors on the phone before the visit.
Redlands offices run a bit of everything. Toshiba and Kyocera copiers lead, Sharp and Konica Minolta are common in schools and clubs, Canon and Ricoh in practices, and HP or Brother lasers handle the little jobs. We stand apart from the makers.
Redlands visits are done by trained, experienced and certified technicians carrying the common spares, and 98% of repairs are finished on the first visit. If a fault returns we repair it again free. The price is settled by phone before a booking is made. A busy line still gets a logged call and a return call. For machines that are finished we have warranted new and refurbished commercial copiers, and we buy used ones.
Service history
It also settles arguments. If a drum went in during March and fails in May, the record shows it, and the repeat fix is free.
Office managers who change every year like this most. The history stays with the machine, not with the person who left.
