The copier in the old second bedroom

Walk up the front steps of a converted Queenslander in Paddington or Ashgrove and the reception is usually the old front room. The boardroom is the sunroom. The copier lives in whichever room still has a power point and a bit of floor that does not creak. Floorboards flex under a floor standing machine, and a copier that rocks slightly every time a person walks past will eventually show it in the paper path.

Doors are narrow. Ceilings are high but staircases are tight, and the best spot for the machine is often against a wall with no room to open the side doors. When you ring we ask about steps, about the width of the door, and about where the machine actually sits. Following the river and then the hill

The inner west is a curve of suburbs from Milton round to Sherwood, with ridges and creeks in between. It helps to think of it in stretches, because the offices change along the way.

Describe the symptom in your own words if the error code means nothing to you. Mention whether it happens on every page or only on the long run. That usually narrows it down before anyone has picked up a screwdriver.

After the floods

Parts of Chelmer, Graceville, Milton and Toowong have been under water in the past, in 2011 and again in 2022 for some streets. People in those pockets have a particular look at the copier room. They keep the machine on a stand or a bench, they run cabling at a height, and some have a plan that involves a couple of strong people and a trolley.

A copier that has taken water, or that sat in a damp room for weeks afterwards, may start up and then fail in odd ways: boards that glitch, corroded connectors, paper that jams for no reason. We say plainly if it is worth repairing. Sometimes it is not, and we say that too. If you are rebuilding, ask us about a replacement on the same call, and we can supply one that is warranted.

Clinics, studios and the university crowd

Indooroopilly and Toowong carry plenty of practices. A dental surgery, a physio, a solicitor with three staff. Those places print letters, referrals and forms that people are waiting to carry out the door. A machine that stops mid consent form is a problem you can hear across the waiting room.

The university sets a rhythm of its own at St Lucia, and the offices and little businesses around it print in bursts that follow teaching dates and deadlines. School and church offices across the western suburbs run the same way, with newsletters and forms done in bulk at the start and end of term. If something is off in those weeks, ring early. Timing is not promised, but we will say honestly what is possible.

Storm season and the power board

The wet season brings thunderstorms that come over the range in the afternoon. A copier that dies with a click during one has often lost a power supply board or a network card, and it is worth telling us it happened in a storm. A decent surge board costs very little against that repair, and we are happy to say which ones are worth buying.

Humidity matters in the other direction. An open ream on a shelf in a house with no air conditioning in the back will curl and stick. If a machine jams far more in January than in July, look at the paper store before blaming the copier.

How we handle belts and rollers

A transfer belt is lifted by its edges and set on a clean surface, not on a desk covered in paperwork. Rollers are wiped, fitted square and turned by hand before the power goes on. It sounds fussy and it is the difference between one visit and two.

The technician is trained, experienced and certified, and 98% of repairs are done on the first visit. If the same fault returns, we fix it again at no charge.

If the machine belongs to somebody else

Plenty of west side offices rent or lease the copier. The agreement may say who services it, and a repair by someone outside the agreement can cause an argument with the owner. Read the paperwork first. If service is the owner's job, ring them. If it is yours, or the agreement has ended and the machine is now yours to look after, ring us and we will say what the fault looks like and what it takes.

Do you offer printer and photocopier service in my inner west suburb?

Our office is an old house with narrow doors and steps. Does that cause a problem?

Not usually. Tell us about the steps, the door width and where the machine sits, and we plan the visit around that. Sometimes it means a second person or a trolley.

Can you fix a copier that was in the 2022 floods?

We will look at it and say honestly whether a repair is worth doing. Water damage can show up weeks later as board faults and corroded connectors, so we are cautious about promising anything before a look.

The machine only jams in summer. Is it worn out?

Check the paper first. Reams that sat open in a humid room pick up moisture and misfeed in ways that look like worn rollers. If fresh, dry paper still jams, rollers are the next suspect.

Is there a way to protect the copier during storm season?

A good surge protected power board is cheap and worth having. If a machine died in a storm, say so when you ring, since the power side and the network card are where we begin.

Do you service plotters in Milton and Toowong?
